Your employer has received the good news: your 482 nomination is approved. You can now focus on the remaining visa checks with more certainty about the employer stage.
The next question is usually, “What do I still need to provide?”
The answer depends on whether your visa application is already lodged and which requirements remain outstanding. This guide focuses on the Skills in Demand subclass 482 Core Skills stream. Specialist Skills and Labour Agreement applications need their own stream-specific checks.
Start with the two decisions
The nomination concerns the employer’s proposed position. The visa application concerns your eligibility to take it up, alongside the other visa requirements. Home Affairs must approve the nomination before it can grant the visa. Official Core Skills guidance
Use this distinction to organise your next steps:
| Employer and nomination file | Your visa file |
|---|---|
| Approved nomination details and nominated occupation | Identity, qualifications and employment evidence |
| Current position and employment arrangements | English evidence or an applicable exemption |
| Any changes since the nomination was prepared | Health, character and family documents |
| Employer contact for outstanding questions | Accurate application answers and remaining requests |
You do not need to rewrite every employer document simply because the visa is still pending. Start by identifying what has changed and what the visa file still needs.
1. Make your experience easy to verify
For the Core Skills stream, Home Affairs requires at least one year of relevant experience in the nominated occupation or a related field. The experience must fall within the relevant five-year period; qualifying part-time or casual work needs to add up to the full-time equivalent. You must also demonstrate the skills needed for the role. Core Skills eligibility
A useful employment pack connects three things:
- What you did: duties, responsibilities and the nature of the work.
- When and how much you worked: exact dates, hours and any changes in role.
- What supports that account: employer references, contracts, payslips, tax records or other relevant records.
A senior title alone tells the reader very little. “Manager” could describe very different work across two businesses. Explain the actual responsibilities and show how they relate to the nominated role.
Before uploading, compare the dates in your CV, reference letters and application. Resolve discrepancies rather than leaving the case officer to work out which version is correct.
2. Check whether a skills assessment is required
A mandatory assessment applies to certain applicants, rather than every 482 applicant. Where required, Home Affairs says it must have been commenced or completed within the three years before applying, with the assessment reference included. Evidence of a claimed exemption also matters. Official skills-assessment guidance
Keep qualifications, transcripts and professional registration documents together. If your occupation requires a licence or registration, check the relevant requirements for performing that work in Australia. Visa-condition guidance
The practical question is: can someone reading the file understand why your training and experience equip you to do this job?
If you would like a professional check of what is still missing, book a consultation before making assumptions about the remaining visa work.
3. Use the correct English evidence
Check the 482-specific English requirements, including the accepted test, required component scores, timing and any exemption. Do not assume that a result accepted for another visa automatically meets the 482 rules. Official English requirements
Save the complete result, not a cropped screenshot. If relying on an exemption, identify it clearly and include the supporting evidence. This makes the basis of your application easier to follow.
4. Finish the personal and family checks
The remaining work is often spread across several small items:
- Passport details and name changes.
- Relationship and dependant information.
- Address, travel and immigration history.
- Requested police certificates and character disclosures.
- Required health examinations and health-insurance arrangements.
Home Affairs requires truthful character answers and may request police certificates or additional forms. Read each question carefully, including where it asks about charges rather than only convictions. Character requirements
Follow the examination instructions relevant to your application. Having health insurance and meeting the health requirement are separate checks. Health requirements
If family members are included, give each person a short outstanding-document list. That is usually easier to manage than one long list for the whole family.
5. Check for changes since the nomination
Ask the employer to confirm that the proposed job and arrangements are still current. If the role, salary, work location or employing entity has changed, have the change assessed before relying on the original file.
Also update relevant personal changes, such as a new passport, address or family circumstances. Home Affairs explains how to report changes through its change-in-situation guidance.
For an onshore application, review your current visa position and conditions before making work or travel plans. The nomination approval itself does not extend your stay or create work rights.
A straightforward next-step plan
If the visa is not yet lodged: complete the eligibility and document review, confirm the nomination linkage and check the applicable lodgement timing before submitting.
If the visa is already lodged: review outstanding requests, update changed information and check that the correct documents are attached to the visa application. Do not submit a second application simply because the nomination has now been approved.
Keep one tracker with four columns: item, person responsible, due date and completed. It turns “we are waiting for the visa” into a manageable list of actions.
Frequently asked questions
Does nomination approval mean my visa will be approved?
It is an important step, but the visa applicant must still satisfy the visa requirements. Check your own evidence and any outstanding Department requests.
Should I lodge another visa application after nomination approval?
If your visa application is already lodged, review that application and its nomination linkage. Nomination approval alone is not a reason to lodge a duplicate application.
Can I start work because my nomination is approved?
Check your current visa and conditions. Nomination approval itself does not give you permission to work or extend your stay.
