Achievement-based · Invitation required
Have internationally recognised achievements in your field? NIV considers your personal record of exceptional and outstanding achievement, rather than whether your occupation appears on a skilled list.
Your occupation alone cannot establish whether this pathway fits your circumstances.
NIV recognises exceptional achievement in a profession, sport, the arts, or academia and research. A job title, salary, qualification or priority sector does not establish eligibility.
Describe your achievements through the separate NIV EOI process. An EOI is not a visa application and does not guarantee an invitation.
Priority two concerns nomination on Form 1000 by an expert Australian, state or territory government agency. Its EOI evidence requirements differ from ordinary visa-stage nomination. Agency nomination does not guarantee an invitation.
Home Affairs decides whom to invite. An invitation allows an application; it is not a pre-assessment of visa eligibility. The visa must be lodged within 60 days of invitation.
Home Affairs assesses your achievements, continuing prominence, benefit to Australia, ability to establish yourself, an eligible nominator with a national reputation in your field and other requirements. NIV is open to any age; applicants under 18 or aged 55 and over must demonstrate exceptional benefit to the Australian community. English, health, character and other criteria still need checking.

General pathway information, checked 31 October 2026. This pilot does not assess eligibility or predict an invitation.
Start with what you personally achieved, why it is exceptional in your field, and how independent sources recognise it internationally. Evidence is considered in context; this is not a checklist where one tick is enough.
A patent, publication, PhD, senior position or high income alone does not establish exceptional achievement. Sector priorities guide selection; they are not an occupation eligibility list.
