A visa application review starts with a simple question: do your forms and documents agree? You may have ticked every box on a document checklist and still have a date, answer or supporting record that needs attention.
Home Affairs’ Check twice, submit once guidance asks applicants to provide the required documents and correct information. Start with the current instructions for your visa subclass. Then make a separate pass through the material you have prepared, using these five cross-checks.
1 Check names across the whole application
Compare the passport you are using with your application forms and identity documents. Read each name carefully, including middle names, spelling and order. Check saved answers and autofill rather than assuming they carried across correctly.
Home Affairs also asks you to include names you have previously used. If records show a genuine name change or a different spelling, identify the reason and the supporting evidence. Avoid editing an official document simply to make everything look identical.
2 Put important dates side by side
Make a short timeline of the dates relevant to your application, such as birth, travel, addresses, employment and relationship events. Compare it with the forms and supporting records.
Watch for day-and-month reversals and dates copied from memory. An employment start date may differ from a contract-signing date for a genuine reason. Find out what each date means before treating it as an error. Where a discrepancy needs correction, ask the issuer or translator to check it.
3 Read the answers against the evidence
Take one answer at a time and ask which document supports it. Does the document identify the right person, cover the period you have claimed and actually establish the detail you are relying on?
For example, a letter confirming a current job may leave an earlier employment period unexplained. A document can be present in the folder without answering the question. Keep a short list of unsupported answers and resolve them before your final check.
4 Compare relationship and family details
Where relevant, compare the dates and descriptions in your forms, statements and family records. Check that references to a spouse, partner or other family member are consistent throughout.
For partner applications, distinguish events such as first meeting, starting a relationship and beginning to live together. Those dates need not be the same. If accounts differ, return to the facts and available records rather than changing wording just to remove the difference. Seek case-specific advice when you are unsure how to explain the history.
5 Check the actual files you intend to submit
Open each final file. Check that it is readable, complete and the version you meant to use. Match translations with their source documents and check key details together.
Our document checklists can help organise the categories. Keep your own copy of the final forms and attachments: Home Affairs says supporting documents cannot be accessed from ImmiAccount after upload in its attachment guidance.
