Distinguished Talent visa subclasses 885 (onshore) & 124 (offshore)

The Distinguished Talent (Subclasses 885 & 124) visas are permanent visas for people who have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in an eligible field.

You must be in Australia to apply and be granted the Subclass 885 visa. Whereas Subclass 124 visa can only be granted if you are outside Australia.


Visa Application Fees (AUD)

From AUD 4.110.

If you are assessed as not having functional English then you need to pay a 2nd instalment of   $4,890 otherwise the 2nd instalment is NIL.

There is also a fee for each family member who applies for the visa with you.

You might also have to pay other costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.


Age Limit (years)

To apply for this visa you must be between 18 and 55 years old.

If you are under 18 years old or you are aged 55 years or older when you apply, you must be of exceptional benefit to the Australian community.

Key Highlights
  • Both Distinguished talent visa subclasses have virtually the same requirements.
    • If you apply for Distinguished Talent Subclass 885 Visa then you must be in Australia when you apply and when this visa is decided.
    • You can apply for Distinguished Talent Subclass 124 Visa from within or outside Australia but you must be outside Australia when this visa is decided.
  • For both distinguished talent visa subclasses you must :
    • have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in one of the following:
      • a profession;
      • a sport;
      • the arts;
      • academia and research; and
    • be still prominent in your area in the past 2 years
    • show that you would be an asset to the Australian community
    • have no difficulty getting employment, or in becoming established independently in your field in Australia
    • be between 18 and 55 years old when you apply otherwise you will need to provide evidence of exceptional benefit to the Australian community
    • meet health and character requirements
    • meet special return criteria
    • not have any outstanding debt to the Australian government
    • be nominated using form 1000 by one of the following:
      • an Australian peak body or organisation
      • an Australian citizen
      • an Australian permanent resident, or
      • an eligible New Zealand citizen
  • The nominating person or organization must also:
    • have a national reputation in your field
    • be highly regarded throughout Australia – a reputation in one state or region would not be considered ‘national’
